AFA.2018.0196_CONSERVATION AND REHABILITATION OF THE CHURCH OF SÃO PEDRO, LEIRIA

The present Church of St. Peter began to be built in the last years of the twelfth century, being mentioned for the first time in documents of 1200 related to a dispute between the bishop of Coimbra and the Monastery of Santa Cruz on the ecclesiastical domain of the city. The conclusion of the work must have taken place in the first decades of the thirteenth century. Leiria was designated seat of bishopric in 1545, and for a short time the church of São Pedro served as cathedral of the city until the conclusion of the current Cathedral of Leiria, in 1574. The temple served as a parish church and underwent some reforms in the seventeenth and seventeenth centuries. In the nineteenth century it came to be used as theater, barn and even prison. In 1910 was designated National Monument and in 1933 restored by the DGEMN
