AFA.2017.0125_Rehabilitation and Structural Strengthening of the Pegões Aqueduct Section - Tomar
The Pegões Aqueduct, the Pegões Altos or Aqueduct of the Convent of Christ, is located near Tomar, over the valley of Ribeira dos Pegões and is one of the largest and most imposing Portuguese aqueducts.
It was built with the purpose of supplying water to the Convent of Christ in Tomar, and is about 6 km long.
Its construction began in 1593, under the reign of Philip I of Portugal, under the direction of Philippe Terzio, (master architect of the kingdom) and was completed in 1614 by Pedro Fernando de Torres, already in the reign of Philip III, as in Informs a tombstone attached to the initial construction of water catchment located precisely in the place of Pegões.
The aqueduct has 58 full-back arches, at its highest point, on 16 ogival arches resting on pillars. Its maximum height is 30 meters. At the ends it presents vaulted houses, which have in the center, a large sink for the decanting of the water.
