AFA.2017.0112_Building Rehabilitation in the Stairs of Codeçal, nº56 - Porto

Of the most well-known monuments of the stairs of the Codeçal one finds the Recolhimento of the Iron that, initially, existed in a recess of the Dark street, in front of the aljube. However, since the windows of the prison could be used to devastate everything that was happening inside the collection, it was decided to transfer it to a more suitable place. The Codeçal was the place chosen, thanks to the gratuitous yielding of lands by a benefactor in 1729, who, however, imposed as a condition that the gathering should take patroness of St. Mary Magdalene and dedicate herself to receiving "all those women who, repentant Of the bad life and dissolute customs of the world, if they wanted in that Recolhimento ". The institution was therefore known as the Recolhimento Nossa Senhora do Patrocínio and Santa Maria Madalena. But, as a rule, it continued to be known simply as Iron Gathering, just as it was on Dark Street.
